“There are two kinds of knowledge”, states Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich; “one is general and the other specialized”. Contrary to most educational systems Mr. Hill believed that general knowledge in and of itself was worth little, regardless of “quantity or variety”. He further believed that knowledge is not power, as many to this day believe and state, but rather the potential for power. Knowledge, according to him, has a conditional requirement for power. It must be organized into a definite plan of action with a definite direction.
Leaders may indeed be born as such; however, many more began as “intelligent followers” to use Mr. Hill’s terminology. A person of this type is more likely to develop into a leader themselves.
When you have Desire for something, nothing stands in your way. This isn’t a “fired up” feeling. Quite the opposite. It’s almost a calmness, a feeling of knowing it has already happened. It was his opinion, and most will undoubtedly agree, that leading with the consent and sympathy of the followers is preferable for all concerned. It was also his opinion that leading by force would soon give way to leading by consent. His vision of the future role of leaders was that it would be vastly different, at least as it would pertain to the business world. We have yet to totally realize his vision.
A secondary result, he noted, will often occur at this point. An idea will be born with the addition of imagination to our specialized knowledge. It’s sort of like being in the right place at the right time and all the right things are in place. The birth of this idea is our moment of opportunity. It’s the seizing, or rather our seizing of the moment, that can lead to our fortune.
Very few of us get very far on our own. Most of us, at one time or another has had to seek out strong, knowledgeable and effective leaders. We learn to lead by following the leaders. The world is continually looking for those who are qualified and willing to assume the role. “This necessity may be your opportunity”, Napoleon Hill, “Think and Grow Rich
