Creating magic tricks is a type of performing arts. Magic is made to entertain people, creating an illusion that the impossible is happening in front of them. The masters who are able to successfully create these illusions are known as magicians or illusionists.
The word Magic comes from the Latin word Magi. The Magi was a person who had the ability to read the stars and predict the future. One of the most famous creators of magic tricks was Harry Houdini. Not only was he an amazing magician, but he was the greatest escapologist to ever live.
Magic tricks are successfully created with mis direction and sleight of hand. Sometimes mirrors or some other form of deception was used as well. Anything the magician could do to create a sense of wonder as he performs his seemingly impossible magic tricks.
Audiences are the biggest part of these magic tricks though. Without a willing audience, they wouldn’t be possible. People who go to a magic show are willingly opening themselves to deception. They are willing to be entertained by trickery. But trickery or not, the shows always amaze the audiences.
Houdini was such a great magician because the simple fact that his audience trusted him. He spent time debunking the claims of charlatans and false magicians while entertaining his audience. This practice is still followed today by magicians such as Penn and Teller and James Randi.
For much of the twentieth century, magic became merely a child’s form of entertainment. This began to change with the revival of Doug Henning. Henning brought practical magic tricks back to the adult audiences and he became popular on television as well as live shows.
After this, many magicians began to come out of the woodwork that are more than amazing. Performers such as David Blaine began performing Houdini type magic tricks. He became a master at escapes and endurance displays, always amazing his audiences. These magicians we watch on television typically perform in front of a live audience to earn the trust of their audience on television.
Most of the magic tricks today are based on old principals. The term it’s all done with smoke and mirrors referred to magic tricks. But most today don’t use mirrors because of the difficulty in transporting them and setting them up.
There are different types of magic tricks that can be performed. Restoration tricks are where an object is destroyed first then brought back whole again. Transformation tricks are when objects change from one thing into another. Vanishing tricks are when the magician makes an object or person disappear and Production tricks are where he makes things appear out of nowhere.
Tricks of teleportation are when an illusionist is able to move one object from one place to another. Escapology is when an illusionist is able to escape some sort of restraints and move his way to safety. Illusionists also perform levitation where they seemingly make an object, or even a person, float in mid air. Penetration illusions are where the performer makes one solid object pass through another one. Most magic shows today have a good mix of all of these magical stunts. They are able to wow audiences each time.
